OK. So the holidays were fun. And yummy. Really tasty. OK. I did put on a few extra pounds. Part of those changes are probably because of the eggnog and holiday cookies, but part of it could be that our bodies naturally change shape over time. Women, after 40, on average, lose 1/3 to 1/2 pound of muscle each year while gaining the same amount in body fat.
The most important issue to address is waist-hip ratio (high abdominal fat can lead to high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and heart disease). This ratio is calculated by measuring the circumference of the waist, just above the belly button, and dividing by the hip circumference. It's important to try to have all numbers lower than 88.
You can try dieting and exercise to reduce belly flab, but you have to remember to be your own 'biggest fan'. Change your relationship with food. Put an eating plan in place and create a support system to help you. If you have a setback, forgive and get back in the saddle. You can do this...for you...for your health!
