1/26/10 Katie's Healthy Eating Journal: Tuesday

Let's go over some general guidelines when it comes to buffets.  My advice is clear and simple:  never, I repeat, never dine at one.  It is like asking to gain ten pounds.  My husband went there today for a work luncheon.  He was complaining that he never is able to get anything healthy at these places and he's right.  You can't hold the oil, butter, and fried batter.  Not to mention, even I whom I'd like to think has great willpower, have a hard time controlling myself at these restaurants.  There is no definitive plate telling you, "you're done."  The temptation to go up for seconds, thirds, and fourths is too great.  I know you're going to laugh but I'm honestly appalled that they are legal.  The United States has a severe obesity problem and it's restaurants like these that just keep the scale tipping; and not in a favorable weigh.  About a month ago I was desperate for somewhere "healthy" to eat for dinner and boy was I naive.  I thought, hmmm Asian Buffet has got to have healthy options, right?  I am sure I was stereotyping thinking, Asians are typically thin people, if it's a buffet it's probably filled with tons of veggies, rice, and meat.  I honestly don't know what I was thinking.  I mean, it's "Americanized" Chinese food and it couldn't have been a worse option for me.  I picked through every dish that had broccoli, onions, or peppers, but the amount of butter and oil they swam in was enough to make me sick.  If you're dining out, stick to places where you have more control in what you order/eat, and the temptation to overeat is not so great.
