What to eat during the holidays

My patients frequently ask me what they should eat during the holidays. With all the tasty food around they are concerned with what is safe. So I’ll tell you what I tell them.

What is most important in your diet is what you eat day in and day out when you’re eating to get from breakfast to lunch to dinner. It’s your habitual, daily food intake that makes the difference in the long term. This relates to the food you eat 350 days of the year. The other fifteen days are the holidays, birthdays and special celebrations that are a part of everyone’s lives. During these times I tell people to just enjoy themselves and indulge a bit. Diabetics still need to be carbohydrate conscious because you just can’t wish that away, unfortunately. Having gravy on your roast beef at Christmas dinner won’t undo a year’s worth of otherwise healthy eating and it will make you happy.

So my advice, enjoy the holiday food for the brief time it’s here. Common sense and moderation is always the rule. A happy heart is a healthy heart.
