Like, I mentioned in my past few blogs, I was really proud of myself for the amount of exercise and healthy choices I made over vacation.  Vacation is one of the most difficult times to stick to your diet.  If it's not all the dining out you do sometimes it's just sharing a house or condo with someone else.  Other family or friends may not eat as healthy as you and there could be an abundance of appetizers, desserts, and alcohol staring you in the face every day.  It's more challenging to eat healthy if fattening food is in the house.  I was curious how much on average people gain while on vacation and it can be anywhere from 3 - 8 pounds!  This is startling to me!  But, it is vacation so try not to stress too much about packing on the pounds and just make it a point to get in a little exercise every day to help balance things out!  I, luckily, maintained while on the trip!

So, I promised I would finish my tale of what a supremely stressful trip it was.  As if a sick baby and the passing of a family friend were not enough...my mom called Thursday morning to tell me not to worry but Maddie, one of our labs, was having petit mal seizures and blood had filled up her eye sockets so badly that they were protruding out of her skull.  Don't worry?  Well, she didn't describe it so blatantly until much later but I could tell how grave my parents' voices sounded and I knew it wasn't good.  Our vet didn't know what was wrong with her other than to say, "It was out of her area of expertise."  I was sick with worry and didn't hear word from another vet who was an oncologist until  10 hours later.  Her sight was not damaged but she was hemorrhaging and they needed to find why.  It was going to be expensive and the vet thought if I opted not to that she would not survive the weekend. He recommended our dog see and internal specialist and this doctor thought she most likely had an immune disease or possibly a terminal cancer.  As you can see it was nothing but devastating news for someone who's dogs are part of the family.

Another 24 hours later and lots of money worth of testing, he discovered my dog had actually eaten rat poison.  We live on a farm and there's mice everywhere so we definitely do have poison sitting around but it's all in sealed containers.  Later, we found that she had somehow busted out of her cage while we were gone, knocked the tupperware off the shelf, and somehow gotten the lid open to eat a whole tub of poison.  Thankfully, she is going to be OK with the help of Vitamin K pills and eye drops.  She is not have any physical activity for 30 days due to her lungs being filled with blood making it difficult to breathe.

Needless to say, we left our trip early to ensure that our son could survive the car trip to make it on time for our family friend's visitation and funeral, and see to it that our dog started getting well.  I am so glad my parents watch our dogs and took Maddie to the vet that day.  They would not give up until Mad had a vet that could find what was wrong with her.  They saved her life and I'm so thankful.  She's my baby, too! Now how's that for a stressful vacation?!
